Popular Moulding and Trim Types

Moulding is all about creating a consistent aesthetic from floor to ceiling, and even from room to room. You can really spruce up the look of your entire home when adding moulding to your walls, door frames, window frames, and ceilings. Moulding, often called trim, is visually stimulating and easy on the eyes, adding a nice touch of class to each of your rooms.

But if you’re wondering where to begin, we can help you with that. Here are some areas that are great for adding moulding to, as well as different styles to choose from. Read below to get a head start on accenting your home with the beautiful and complimentary look of moulding.

Common Areas For Moulding and Trim

Let’s start where moulding could work best in your home. Here are 5 places where moulding looks great:

1. Ceiling Moulding – Adding moulding where the wall meets the ceiling can add an elegant pop to the borders of the room.

2. Windows & Doors Moulding Moulding around windows and doors heightens their look and makes them appear bigger than they actually are. For smaller spaces, this could add an ornamental depth to the room.

3. Wall Moulding – This style is one that is used for taking the decor of a room to another level. Wall moulding enhances the individuality of wall panels, highlights and even frames pieces of art, and looks beautiful when painted with an accented color to compliment the walls.

4. Floor Moulding – Like ceiling moulding, floor moulding completes the look of both the wall and floor, bordering at the junction of the two. Floor moulding also adds a layer of protection to the bottoms of walls, which can become banged up over time. Moulding is much easier to replace if this occurs, rather than trying to fix the wall itself.

5. Exterior Moulding – Trim added to the outside of your house can give it a classic look and can be found in many places. Often, it can be found on porches, windows, doors, columns, corners and overhangs.

Most Commonly Used Mouldings and Trim

Let’s take a look at common types of moulding and how they’re used:

  • Crown Moulding – This moulding is used where the ceiling meets the walls and can look great in dining rooms, living rooms and hallways. This is a clever and elegant way to add the illusion of height. Crown moulding comes in a variety of sizes and styles.
  • Baseboard Moulding – Baseboard moulding is a floor moulding that can be used in any room. It protects the bottom of the wall while adding a nice border to the floor. When used in the same room as crown moulding, it can complete the overall framing of the decor. Baseboard moulding also comes in a wide array of sizes and styles, and therefore can be matched with crown moulding in the same room.
  • Case Moulding – Used around doors and windows, case moulding can help keep out extra moisture, add elegance and cover up any gaps in the framing. Like crown and baseboard, case moulding comes in many sizes and styles to choose from.
  • Cove Moulding – Also a type of ceiling moulding, like crown, it is used where the wall and ceiling meet but specifically comes with concave features.
  • Gable Pediments – Gable pediments, or brackets, are a beautiful addition to the exterior part of the home. They are typically seen in the topmost part of a roof’s overhang (in the front of the house and the back of the house), usually somewhat ornate and creating a sense of continuity from one slope to the other. They also appear on porch roofs and garages as well.
