Bay & Bow Windows

Bay and bow windows are two popular styles that homeowners add for extra natural light, ventilation, storage space, and ambience. Both project outward from the home’s exterior wall, giving a feeling of openness to the outside. They can both be created by building individual rough openings into the wall to accommodate standard sized windows, or they can be connected together at the factory, shipped, and installed as one unit.

While they share these similarities, they are in fact different. Read on to see which style you would prefer for your home.

Bay Windows

Bay windows are composed of 3 separate window panels. They have a large center window with two narrower windows on either side. The side windows are installed at an angle, which causes the bay to extend out beyond, and parallel to, the exterior wall. Depending on its depth, this extension can provide a lovely shelf space or even a very nice seating area.

Bow Windows

Bow windows are often mistaken for their bay counterparts. The main difference is that bow windows are usually made of 4, 5, or even 6 panels. The panels are also often identical in their dimensions and extend out from the home’s exterior in a gradual bend. This curvature provides a wonderful panoramic view, increased ventilation, and extra window seat space.
